ECOLOGY TEAM

<p data-start="86" data-end="259">NatureBureau’s Ecology team delivers expert solutions across terrestrial and marine environments, turning science into meaningful action for wildlife and biodiversity.</p>
<p data-start="266" data-end="633">We work across the UK, Europe and beyond, providing end-to-end ecological services—from site, habitat and species monitoring to surveys, management plans and stakeholder engagement. Our work is scientifically rigorous, clearly communicated and delivered on time, whether through desk studies, fieldwork, technical reports, project specifications or grant proposals.</p>
<p data-start="640" data-end="981">Trusted by international organisations, government bodies, NGOs and private landowners, we design and deliver projects ranging from small-scale studies to multi-million-pound programmes. Our expertise also spans ecological mapping, data management, and the delivery of workshops, seminars and online events for large and diverse audiences.</p>

Paul Goriup

Head of Ecology

<p>Paul Goriup is NatureBureau’s Managing Director and Head of Ecology, with over 40 years’ international experience in biodiversity conservation, ornithology, and protected area management. He holds a Joint Honours BSc in Botany and Zoology from the University of Reading and an MSc in Conservation Science from UCL, and is a Chartered Ecologist and Fellow of CIEEM. Paul founded NatureBureau in 1990 and has since led and advised on major internationally funded projects across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East, including extensive work in Eastern Europe and the Black Sea region. Earlier in his career, he served as Director of Conservation Programmes at the International Council for Bird Preservation (now BirdLife International), overseeing more than 300 global projects. Paul is an invited member of the IUCN World Commission on Protected Areas and Species Survival Commission, a Trustee of the Great Bustard Group, a scientific adviser to the Knepp Rewilding project, and a member of the CIEEM Strategy Panel.</p>

<p data-start="155" data-end="586">Athena Allen (<span data-olk-copy-source="MessageBody">MSc, BSc (Hons), ACIEEM) is Marine Projects Manager at NatureBureau, leading international marine conservation and policy projects for the European Commission, national governments, and regional organisations. She specialises in European marine environmental legislation, particularly the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD), with expertise spanning biodiversity, food webs, seabed integrity, Natura 2000 habitat mapping, EU seabed carbon work, and fisheries and shark conservation projects linked to CITES and Regional Fisheries Management Organisations. Alongside consultancy, Athena is an active marine researcher focusing on cephalopod ecology, including squid and cuttlefish reproduction, sustainable octopus fisheries, and the impacts of ocean warming on UK species. She is Convenor of CIEEM’s Early Careers Special Interest Group and Secretary of the Marine and Coastal SIG, supporting professional development across the UK marine sector, and was recently shortlisted for the Bob Earl Early Careers Award. Outside work, Athena can often be found pitch-side at the local rugby club or rockpooling along the coast.</span></p>

Kristina Wood

Senior Ecologist

<p>Kristina Wood is a senior terrestrial ecologist at NatureBureau with a BSc (Hons) in Animal Health and Welfare from Harper Adams University and an MRes in Anthrozoology from Hartpury University. She supports long-term ecological projects across the UK and Europe, including the management of a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) on behalf of Eton College. Specialising in bat ecology and conservation, Kristina delivers surveys ranging from preliminary assessments to complex mitigation strategies, supporting planning applications while ensuring robust protection for bats and their roosts. She holds a CL17 Bat Licence and is currently working towards her CL18 Bat License. Her wider work includes protected species surveys, impact assessments, Method Statements, and advising on Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) requirements. Kristina is an active committee member of the Hampshire Bat Group, where she serves as newsletter editor and manages the North Hampshire Bat Box Project, and has experience planning and delivering both in-person and online workshops. Outside work, she enjoys gym sessions, forest hikes, and time at home with her rescue animals.</p>

Our work includes nature reserve guides, interpretation, newsletters, technical reports and an acclaimed range of natural history books published under our imprint, <em data-start="598" data-end="619">Pisces Publications</em>.</p>

Peter Creed

Creative Director

<p>Pete is the Creative Director at NatureBureau, bringing over 30 years of experience as a graphic designer, publisher, wildlife expert, and photographer. He combines a keen eye for detail with a passion for wildlife, contributing to both printed and online media and curating an extensive image library of thousands of flora and fauna. Pete has published numerous books on plants, invertebrates, fungi, and other wildlife, including <em data-start="549" data-end="625">A Comprehensive Guide to the Insects of Great Britain and Northern Ireland</em>, <em data-start="627" data-end="678">A Photographic Guide to Insects of the New Forest</em>, <em data-start="680" data-end="749">A Photographic Guide to Insects Southern Europe & The Mediterranean</em>, and <em data-start="755" data-end="776" data-is-only-node="">The Bees of Norfolk</em>. He has also authored or co-authored regional guides such as <em data-start="838" data-end="937">A Guide to Finding Butterflies and Day-flying Moths in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire</em>, <em data-start="939" data-end="970">A Guide to Finding Hoverflies</em>, <em data-start="972" data-end="1000">A Guide to Finding Orchids</em> (two volumes), <em data-start="1016" data-end="1042">A Guide to Finding Fungi</em>, and <em data-start="1048" data-end="1075">A Guide to Finding Mosses</em> in the same counties. A dedicated naturalist, Pete regularly leads walks and talks for the Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire Wildlife Trust, with a particular focus on invertebrates, orchids, and fungi.</p>
